    Michael Zapin, Digital Sports Pioneer

For more than 25 years, Michael Zapin has been a pioneer in US sports media and horseracing.

Zapin transformed horse racing businesses across the U.S. and impacted key international markets—including Japan, Hong Kong, UAE, Australia, France, and the U.K. With expertise in digital innovation, strategic partnerships, and product development, he is excited about continuing this journey to drive ambitious growth in today’s evolving landscape.

In 2009, Zapin joined Daily Racing Form (DRF) as its first full-time digital employee following its acquisition by Arlington Capital Partners. Recognizing the opportunity to modernize the 115-year-old media brand, Zapin quickly worked alongside the CEO and Board of Directors to execute a company-wide digital transformation strategy. These efforts culminated in DRF’s acquisition by Z Capital Partners in 2018.

Zapin built a 20-person digital team spanning website development, video production, social media, product innovation, partnerships, and data services—supported by an external web development team of up to 20 developers. Under his leadership, DRF expanded its digital ecosystem, launching and scaling consumer subscriptions, B2B products, and operational efficiencies. By seamlessly integrating multimedia workflows across every U.S. racetrack, DRF unlocked new revenue streams and transformed its value proposition for horse racing enthusiasts.

A defining achievement was launching DRF’s integrated online betting platform, embedding DRF’s exclusive digital products within the betting experience—reshaping engagement in the industry.

The success of DRF’s digital expansion set the stage for a major international growth initiative, with Zapin spearheading the online promotion and U.S. distribution of marquee global racing events— including the Dubai World Cup, Melbourne Cup, Hong Kong Cup, Royal Ascot, and the Arc de Triomphe—bridging U.S. and international racing markets. These efforts led to the multi-year expansion of DRF’s coverage into full seasonal programming for key international racing circuits, significantly increasing audience reach and revenue.

After DRF, Zapin led US racing initiatives for The Racing Post by adapting its consumer digital products and B2B services for the U.S. market. He played a key role in customizing international data, editorial, and AI-generated betting analysis for U.S. consumers and businesses. Despite financial constraints halting expansion, he successfully secured a partnership with NBC Sports, enhancing Breeders’ Cup coverage with global horse insights.

Before DRF, Zapin was on the team in the data division of ESPN (Disney) licensing sports data for betting and gaming markets worldwide. His focus on international horse racing deepened after ESPN’s sale of the business to PA Media Group, and positioned him at the intersection of global media, technology, and gaming.

A Brooklyn, NY native, Michael Zapin’s passion for horse racing took root during childhood outings to Belmont Park and Saratoga Racecourse with his father and grandfather. He remains deeply engaged with the global racing industry, honing his expertise by handicapping races across international markets in his spare time.
